Samford Women’s Basketball (7-11) (8-1 SOCON) remains in sole possession of first place atop the SOCON standings after winning both contests against the University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans (4-14) (2-7 SOCON) on Thursday and Saturday. While the distance between the two teams on the scoreboard at the end of the games were very different, there was a constant between the two games: good defense. UNCG have been known for their tenacious defense and that showed, especially in the first matchup where the Samford Bulldogs shot an abysmal 33% from the field and made only one 3 point shot (that was good for 7.7% ). The game remained close until the final minutes where a series of Bulldog stops and converted free throws put the game just out of reach for the visiting Spartans. Samford defeated UNCG 46-42.
The first half of Saturday's matchup seemed to set up a repeat of Thursday's match as the half ended with Samford up 25-24. However, Coach Kuhns got her team to flip the script and the team went on a quarter long 19-2 run. Feb 2-8 SOCON Player of the Week Annie Ramil led the team in scoring with 18 and came up one rebound shy of a double double. In total, 12 Bulldogs saw time on the floor during the blowout. This was only the third time this season that Samford won the game while not out rebounding their opponents (Vs UNA 12/11 and @UTC 1/21). Samford defeated UNCG 70-44.
Samford had their worst shooting in SOCON play shooting just 38.7% from the field and 21.7% from downtown (good for a 40.39% eFG%) for the two game series. With the series sweep, Samford extends their current win streak out to 4 straight, also marking the 4th straight time that they have committed 15 or fewer turnovers. The Bulldogs have defended their home court well against visiting SOCON teams, boasting a 5-0 record at home during conference play.
Samford will make the 5 hour trip up to Spartanburg, South Carolina later this week as they take on the Wofford Terriers on Thursday at 6 Central and will stay out of state for the second matchup with the Terriers on Saturday at 1 Central. Both games will be streamed live via ESPN+.
