Baseball finished the midweek slate on Wednesday as they fell to Alabama State in Montgomery by a score of 11-3. In the season series, Alabama State was nothing if not consistent, getting 11 runs to cross the plate in both games against the Bulldogs.
Pitching
Jacob Cravey (L, 0-1) got his first start for the Bulldogs as they played their second midweek game in as many days. Cravey had a pretty solid night, tossing 4 innings where he struck out 5 and allowed only 2 hits and one base on balls. However, under Jacob's watch, 4 Hornets crossed the plate, but only one was earned.
Five Bulldogs came on to pitch after Cravey's day was done, with the relievers allowing 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 5 more Hornets. The only reliever (or pitcher for that matter) to not allow a run was Gene Hurst, throwing a complete inning, getting 2 strike outs and a fly out to end the bottom of the 8th.
Batting
Will David and his replacement Davis Schwartz were to only Bulldogs to bring in their teammates, with David driving home Ryan Crockett in the Top of the 7th and Schwartz clearing the bases with a 2 RBI single in the Top of the 9th, scoring Colton Leadbetter and Joseph Salvo.
On a positive note, Samford out-hit ASU 12-8, but the Bulldogs left 9 teammates stranded. By comparison, in Game 1 of the Toledo series, only 6 Bulldogs were stranded and 8 were left on the base path in Game 3 this past Sunday. Situational hitting is the hallmark of a good team and Samford has yet to be consistent in that department thus far in the season.
Fielding
This game is one that the fielders will want to forget sooner rather than latter after tallying 6 errors. This error total is the most of the season, and will hopefully remain that way for the rest of the 2021 season. Half of the errors were attributed to the Shortstop position, 2 going to Taylor Garris and the other going to his replacement Graham Dvorak.
Samford packed up from Montgomery and started the long trek out to College Station as the Bulldogs take on Texas A&M for a three game series starting on Friday. All three games will be able to be viewed on SECN+.
