Men's Basketball
Nothing seemed to work for the men as they took on the VMI Keydets (11-10, 6-6 SOCON) in Lexington, VA. They shot a meager 30.9% from the field and 17.1% from downtown. While the team limited their turnovers to just 9, Samford got destroyed on the boards, being out-rebounded 52-38 . . . YIKES! The Keydets had their way with Samford, holding all but one player (Freshman guard Jaron Rillie) to single digit point totals.
While the first half ended with only an 8 point Bulldog deficit, the Keydets exploded at the start of the 2nd and cruised their way to their 6th SOCON win.
The Men will continue their road swing on Monday as they visit the 4th place Furman Paladins.
Women's Basketball
When you're right, you're right. Before the start of this series, I said that the Bulldogs needed to do 3 things to win in each game (here). In the first game, Samford lost the rebounding battle by 8 boards. Today, they won it by 10 (15 of today's 41 rebounds were on the offensive end. I don't think that I have to point out how much easier that makes life). While we turned the ball over 13 times today, that's 2 better than Thursday. But that doesn't tell the whole story. On Thursday, we only forced 11 turnovers. Today, we forced 17. Big difference. I also said that we needed to get to the free throw line early and often, but when a team shoots nearly 47% from deep, the amount of shooting fouls committed against you are going to go way down compared to when everything is running through the posts. However, I will take half a win as we got to the line 3 more times today than on Thursday and made 2 more charity points today than on Thursday. A personal W-L record of 2.5 - 0.5 ain't bad, and I'll take it.
Updated Seeding
Not much has changed since last night, but I'll run through the possible scenarios that will give Samford the 1 seed. Because hashtag I care for you, dear reader.
Basically, as long as Samford wins one game this week against ETSU and wins in Macon, we get the one seed.
However, if we wanted to be able to cut down our own net, Samford would need some help from Wofford. Luckily, there is the chance that we can know if Saturday's game will clinch the top spot. For some reason unknown to yours truly, every team except for Samford and ETSU will play their season series on Friday/Sunday, so if Wofford takes the first game of the series against Mercer, we could know exactly what needs to happen on Saturday. At the latest, we'll know how much importance the game in Macon will have by late Sunday afternoon.
